The Day's News...

  • The Senate voted on Tuesday to broaden the government’s spy powers and to give legal protection to phone companies that cooperated in the President's program of eavesdropping without warrants. The bill allows the government to eavesdrop on large bundles of foreign-based communications on its own authority so long as Americans are not the targets. A secret intelligence court, which traditionally has issued individual warrants before wiretapping began, would review the procedures set up by the executive branch only after the fact to determine whether there were abuses involving Americans.
  • The credit crisis is no longer just a subprime mortgage problem. As home prices fall and banks tighten lending standards, people with good, or prime, credit histories are falling behind on their payments for home loans, auto loans and credit cards at a quickening pace, according to industry data and economists. The rise in prime delinquencies, while less severe than the one in the subprime market, nonetheless poses a threat to the battered housing market and weakening economy, which some specialists say is in a recession or headed for one.
  • Hollywood screenwriters can get back to work Wednesday after voting to end their three-month strike, bringing to a close the US entertainment industry's most damaging dispute in 20 years. Writers downed tools on November 5, a move that sent shockwaves through the industry, forcing the postponement or cancellation of several television shows and movies, and causing hundreds of millions of dollars in losses.

It's a symbolic response to a symbolic incentive, but it's adviseable to take the money G Dub is giving us from the economic stimulus package and use it to pay off debt (or hell, just burn it) instead of buying the crap they want us to. Any larger measures that might slow or stop the economy...yea, not sure what to say on that one.

The stimulus plan is bunk anyway. But if you want to do your little part to screw American capitalism, I would put your rebate money under the mattress.

However, I don't think there is any reason to be gleeful about this recession, since only the working and precarious middle classes will be hurting. A few fantastically rich bank executives will slink away in disgrace and be replaced by other, younger, up-and-coming assholes. It's all part of a beautiful natural cycle.

I don't think we should put too much thought into what we can do with our $600 rebates to screw the economy. The economy will go on in whatever way it wants with or with out our $600. However, individually, our money could have a profound effect on our communities and our organizing if we spend it right. Maybe you need some power tools to fix up that house you are squatting. Maybe you need some supplies for the medical clinic you want to get off the ground. Individually, we have no impact on the economy, and collectively, our impact is small. But in our communities, our individual impact is great, and our collective impact is greater. 10 people pooling their rebate checks could have the down payment towards actually owning the next community space.

Of course, if you are debating whether to stuff the money under you mattress or to spend it on beer, I would suggest the mattress. But there could better use.

Good comment cornelius, I agree with your suggestion regarding the money and the approach you advocate in general.

And to the special, I agree, there's no point in celebrating a recession, my point here is only to highlight the unique opportunities presented by it. As you point out, the boom/bust cycle is fundamental to capitalism and certainly does not pose a threat to it. It is important, however, to analyze our context in order to make the best use of it.

cornelius..agreed. this is why i called the incentive symbolic and conceeded our response would be the same. the best thing to do with that money is either help ourselves get out of debt, or like you said, help those directly around us.

Also on this incentive money we will be receiving. I was told it might bite us in the ass come tax time next year. Anyone have any knowledge on something like that?

I agree with the special.

The stimulus plan is an idiotic plan and we will see it will do nothing to positively stimulate the American economy. In fact, special, people will not be saving their rebate whether they want to fuck wit capitalism or not. The mindset is already in. We are in recession, penny pinchers of the world unite.

There is no reason to be excited. Many hard working people are losing there homes at a phenomenal rate. Did that bring a revolution? If so i missed it.

Yeah a few disgrced bankers will probably get replaced by another banker, but they won't slink away disgraced, they will just go to another corporation.

No battle is really being won right now, the workng class is actually losing and losing hard.

Pseudonym - dont dumpster dive for food , GROW SOME FOOD ! DIRT, SUNSHINE, SEED, WATER, BUCKET, =FOOD
= not supporting the capitalists.
The Special- i would have to disagree with putting the money under the mattress as the way 'to screw the capitalist'- the best way ,'I Think', to screw the capitalist is to put them out of business by "killing the profit motive ' in whatever small ammount that can be accomplished .
The way to do this is through Intentional overproduction of everything . So, grow something everywhere and sell it or give it away .
DEATH TO THE PROFIT MOTIVE !!!!!

LobsterBeard- i think you might be wrong . The boom /bust cycles are different now , cuz we are now in 'LATE STAGE CAPITALISM'- my sense of this disasterous economy is that the only way to keep ppl consuming at the pace necessary to keep the system going is to make them utterly ignorant and this causes the workers to be unproductive .how can we possibly compete with hungry third world laborers ? I dont think its possible !
